Sax-O-Philm and Chad Smith
WHAT IS SAX-O-PHILM?
Sax-O-Philm is a unique theatrical concert experience which recreates the atmosphere of the 1920's. It is a fully scripted and produced show, featuring the music of Vaudeville saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft, as performed by Broadway saxophonist Chad Smith, on both alto and c melody saxophones. Sax-O-Philm will transport audiences back to a time during which radio, ragtime, silent flicks, and flappers were all the rage.
Projected silent films and photo montages feature screen legends like Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Mabel Normand, Harry Houdini and countless others. Piano and harp accompany Wiedoeft's music, and also perform as featured soloists, playing 20's favorites by the likes of Scott Joplin and Harpo Marx. The music and films are woven together by the witty dialogue and remembrances of Vaudeville dancer Rosylyn DeMarco. As a feisty senior in the first act she explores her life and the era, but steps back in time and is again the fresh-faced hopeful working for her big break in the Roaring Twenties during the second act, which includes stunning live original dance numbers and an unbelievable performance of Houdini's famous Metamorphosis Illusion.
Sax-O-Philm's unique blending of live music, theatricality and multi-media make this a theatrical concert event unlike any other.
WHY SAX-O-PHILM?
Throughout the the roaring 20's, Rudy Wiedoeft's virtuosic style created a saxophone craze that gripped the nation, and made the sax what it is today. His innovative blend of ragtime, waltzes and concert pieces made him a sensation.
A household name during his own era, he is now all but forgotten. My passion is to reintroduce the music of this phenomenal artist to entertain and inspire the listeners of today. I created Sax-O-Philm: Sounds & Sights of the 20's, to educate, enlighten and excite through Wiedoeft's glorious music.
